Atkins Diet Menu Plan is dedicated to accurate information and reviews on a wide variety of Atkins-related material. There have been so many changes since the original Atkins plan was released to the public that it can be discouraging for people to follow what the “rules” really are. Make no mistake about it… the Atkins Diet does have a series of very specific rules. The Atkins diet was initially adapted by Dr. Atkins in the 1960s from a Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) article. He used it for his own weight loss and was fairly startled with the success and relative ease of his weight loss. Dr. Atkins opened his own weight loss treatment center and went on to treat thousands of patients. In 1972 he released his first book, Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution. The book was later updated and re-released as Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution, often refered to as DANDR by Atkins followers. The Atkins brand of low carb dieting went on to become the most highly marketed (and probably successful) low carbohydrate diet of all time.
Dr. Atkins died in 2003 as a result of complications from a fall. Unfortunately at the time there was some serious mis-reporting around the nature of his death and his weight when he died. His widow strenuously denied that he was in fact overweight, and blamed the steroids used during his hospitilization for a massive weight gain from when he went in to when he died. The Atkins company was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2005 and reemerged in 2006 with a better focus on branding and licensing.
The Atkins diet (and all low carb diets) are subject to quite a bit of criticism from various sources. Everyone from PETA to the American Heart Association has criticised the emphasis on high protein/high fat as a weight loss regiment. Studies around the success of the diet have been fairly nebulous, but by the same token studies from opponents of the Atkins diet have failed to provide meaningful, long lasting proof that the diet is harmful. Dr. Atkins consistently challenged his detractors to back up their claims with meaningful science. Sadly with the wane in popularity of the Atkins diet, real research into the issue is probably not an immediate priority.
Regardless of the truth around the ongoing health, the Atkins Diet remains an extremely popular, and for many people effective, weight loss regime. For those that try and succeed the results are often startling. Many people have tales of losing well in excess of 100 pounds on this diet. The reality is that they are now far healthier than they were before Atkins. And that should be the result we all desire.
